They are, with the exception of mailto, other protocols, methods to exchange data. The last is my own way to think about it. Maybe it isn't totally correct. File Transfer Protocol, Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (when you see the padlock)... The protocol is always the first bit in an URL.
