HTMLHelp Forums _ Graphics, Flash and Multimedia _ Best OsX Jpeg compressor?

Posted by: comicartist Sep 6 2007, 06:58 PM

Hi all,

As I'm about to build a graphics intensive website with huge images, I need a tool that will give the smallest jpegs.
I read about "Jpeg Pro" where the writeup says it gives file sizes half that of Photoshop Jpegs. Does anyone have
any opinions either way? I'm using a G5 Powermac, OSX 10.4.

Thanks, Comicartist.

Do you mean ProJPEG from BoxTop? I've used it on Windows and I like it. I'm not a graphics person, still I would want some more features. As far as I can judge it does a good job though.

Other than software bundled with hardware that I've bought, all I've used is GIMP. There is a http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/. I can't vouch for its ability to compress every last byte out of JPEGs though.

One of the best OS X graphics programs is the venerable shareware program http://www.lemkesoft.com/ from Lemke Software.
It will open and convert just about any type graphic file there is, and has a couple different kinds of JPEG compressors available.

Pandy, Darin and Jimlongo,
Thanks all. Pandy, no I don't think the program was from Boxtop. It is called Jpeg Pro and the maker is Autograph International. I have a hunch it may not be Mac compatible. Jimlongo, thanks for the tip. I will have a look at Graphic Converter. Thanks again.

Funny. I had to open mine and look what it's called as I don't use it often. Then I went to their site and they use exactly the same blurb as the one you were asking about ("50% smaller"), so then I was convinced they were the same. tongue.gif

For optimizing JPEG on OSX you can use https://jpeg-wizard.en.softonic.com/ otherwise you can use online application such as https://jpegcompressor.com/ for optimizing your jpeg images with supporting different type image formats.
