Hello,

Hope all is going well.

Still sorting the best way to create a HTML email newsletter. Seems the easiest way is to build the email content on my site, then copy and paste it into an email. Wondering if there's an added advantage by doing this... when the email recipient opens content via "view remote content," will Google register the transfer of image(s) as a visit to my site?

Thanks much for any assistance.

Have a great day,
James

Google? Do you use them for site stats? I don't know what google does, but, say, an image that's hosted at your site will be registered in your logs when it's viewed in an email.

I think the way this usually is done is to embed a unique image that's only in the email you are interested in. Then by checking how many times this image has been downloaded you can tell how many has opened the email and allowed images. Those that disallow images is a different matter.

Hi Pandy,

Thank you for the insight. Apologies for the lack of clarity... I was thinking more along the lines of Google SEO rankings. Still need people to find me in a search... : ) If I have a couple hundred people viewing remote content through their email each week, then I'm wondering if Google is seeing this as hundreds of visits to my site each week and increases my search ranking?

Thanks much for your assistance and patience as I sort how to phrase the question... : )

Cheers,
James

No. I don't know what Google gleans from all GMail accounts, but they have no way to access the mail of people who don't use GMail or your server logs.

With "view remote content", do mean using an iframe in an email? If that even works (does it? unsure.gif ), and you use Google's tracking code in the framed web page, then I suppose Google would detect it (except for users that block trackers, or course).

Does Google increase search ranking due to traffic? Never heard of that, but I've been out of the loop with Google for a while. unsure.gif

Hi Folks,

Thanks so much... : )

If I exit my website's wordpress editor and view the page, I can simply copy the content and paste it into an email. Some complex elements don't work, but for a simple newsletter, it seems to work well.

I believe Google SEO records all traffic to a website and where it comes from. As well, determining the validity of the visitor. This is some of the information Google uses to rank for search inquirers.

I guess my questions is... If I send someone an email newsletter from my ISP and when they select view remote content... if it isn't recorded as a visit by Google, then I'll just insert the image into the email and make it easier for the recipient. If Google does record this visit to retrieve remote content, it would be worth while to have recipients select view remote content and boost the visits Google records.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts,
James

How do they do that? If I type your URL in the addressbar of my browser and go to your site, how do you mean Google would know about that?

Hello,

Apologies... Was thinking both links and visits were recorded by Google analytics, but it's just links to the site. Brain cramp... : )

Thanks again for your help, have a great day.

If a web page uses the Google Analytics javascript, Google should detect everytime that page is loaded in a browser (and also the referrer header, except when typing the URL). This assuming the user doesn't block Google's spyware scripts, of course.

But again I don't know if page visits affect Google's ranking of that page, that would sound like positive feedback loop to me. What Google does/did use to do was ranking a page by the number of other sites linking to it (nowadays that simple principle seems to be skewed by all sorts of things though, from the user's location and previous search history to Google's political bias).

But he doesn't use Google for stats. At least that's how I interpreted the answer to my question. Besides, if they really use that for page ranking it would be very screwed up.
