I have designed four nonprofit websites. The first three were pro-bono, but I was paid with an expensive piece of software for my latest effort.

I have been asked to design a 5 or 6 page website for a local law firm. I am clueless about what to ask for a fee. What I have seen advertised on the internet would suggest $300. Does that seem reasonable?

I'm certainly no expert on fees. Anyway, I think it depends on a lot of things.

1. What you are expected to do. Just HTML/CSS/JS? Backend scripting? Databases? Graphic design?

2. Your skill level. An experienced person obviously can charge more than an unexperienced one.

3. What the client expects to pay. Cynical maybe, but I think that comes into play.

Anyway, $300 sounds fair to me if it's just frontend stuff, but what do I know. biggrin.gif

Like Pandy said, it depends on a lot of things. I've done work for $300, but I've also done work for over $10,000. I've seen some people charged over $100,000 for a Web site.

How much do you want to be paid an hour? $20? $30? $50? $100? How much are you and your time worth?

Work that out, then work out how long the project is going to take you.

If this is a simple design a Web page and code it in to six different pages, I'd probably account for five-ten hours, depending on how complex the design is. Add to that the admin costs of dealing with a customer, writing a proposal and quote etc, and that jumps up to 10-15 hours. At my hourly rate, that would make it $650-$975.

Add to that your up-sold products, like a content management system, Web hosting, branding work, marketing work, public relations, search engine optimisation, and you have a very nice contract! smile.gif
