help with making a 404 error page, 404 error page does not work Options

i'm currently making a website with html, and i'm having trouble getting my error 404 page to work.

i made a html document called "404error.html" and made a ".htaccess" to refer to "404error.html" so the custom 404 page will show up instead of the regular one.
this is what i have typed up in .htaccess

CODE

ErrorDocument 404 /404error.html

however, when i give an invalid url, it redirects to me to the regular one instead of the custom one.
did i make any mistakes, or am i just doing this whole thing wrong?

if anyone really cares, the website is "egcomic.com" and link to the 404 page is "egcomic.com/404error.html"
