I am a first-time user of html, and am starting to build a basic page. I have a simple CSS stylesheet as follows:

a:link {color:#000000;}
a:visited {color:#0000ff;}
a:hover {color:#ffff00;}
a:active {color:#00c000;}

The web page contains:

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<link rel="stylesheet" href="patzcuarostyle.css" type="text/css">
</HEAD>
<BODY background="yellow1.jpg">
<BLOCKQUOTE>
<h1><b><font size="6" color="#777700">Patzcuaro Visitor's Guide</font></b></h1>
<A HREF="index.html">Home</A>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<A HREF="attractions.html">Attractions</A>&nbsp;<b>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<A HREF="excursions.html">Excursions</A>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
<A HREF="contacts.html">Contacts</A> </BLOCKQUOTE>

The link colors work for visited, hover, and active, but for not visited they never show black. They always start out yellow (visited), even when the page first loads.

Also, I would like to eliminate the BLOCKQUOTES, but doing so loses the indentation. What do I put in the stylesheet to replace the BLOCKQUOTE?

They always start out yellow (visited), even when the page first loads.

That's likely because you've already visited them. If you clear the browser history (or try in another browser) they should appear unvisited again.

You might use margin or padding on BODY.

This sounds very strange since the visited color is blue, not yellow. Yellow is the hover color. And it works as it should for me, I may add. blink.gif

Let's see patzcuarostyle.css. Must be something you've done in there.

this is everything that is in patzcuarostyle.css:

a:link {color:#000000;}
a:visited {color:#0000ff;}
a:hover {color:#ffff00;}
a:active {color:#00c000;}

yes, blue visited works, yellow hover works, green active works. But the regular unvisited black never shows, even when the page is refreshed and when the computer is turned off and on again. How can I clear browser history, maybe that will reset to black (unvisited).

How do I remove the underlines that appear automatically on the links?

Peculiarer and peculiarer... Can you link to the page or if that's not possibe paste the whole thing in here, both the HTML and the style sheet. Copy-paste, don't type.

While you should use a doctype and have some HTML errors there's nothing that stops the link colors from working. Are you sure you don't view a cached copy of the page?

How do I know if I'm viewing a cached copy of the page? Both the index.html and patzcuarostyle.css files are in the same folder. There are also older copies in the root directory.

When I open the index file that is in the same folder as the .css file will it look for the css file in the same folder? I address the css file as simply patazcuarostyle.,css...

If you've ever loaded the linked page it's cached, and will remain so for as long as the browser settings indicate.

To test, try making a link to some page you know you've never visited, like:

CODE
<a href="http://foo.org/">foo</a>

unless you go there, the link should appear unvisited.

To clear the browser history you can look in the preferences, but you may not want to delete all your history just for testing this...

How could the browser history be the culprit here? The links aren't the visited color. They are the hover color.

Hit refresh/relaod while you hold down Ctrl or Shift (may differ, try both). That *should* give you a fresh copy of the page.

Can you post the URL to this page?

Thank you Pandy and Christian! Yes, the browser history was the problem. Works fine now.

What do I put in the stylesheet to not have the link names underlined?

Pandy - the URL is jiminee.com, but I did not upload anything yet so all we see is a web page hijacked by either name.com where it was registered or arvixe.com the host.

I just signed up yesterday for the hosting so I am guessing that since I identified for Arvixe the domain was registered at name.com they will set up the nameservers.

In a diifferent post two weeks ago Pandy gave me a tip to replace the blockquotes with something inside the css file. In this post Christian suggested to try padding or body - is this best and would it be in the css file or in the index file?

Thanks for all the help...

Sorry, didn't realize you were the same guy. I'm stumped. I still don't see how the browser history could make the links yellow, but anyway it works now so I guess all is well. biggrin.gif

I simply assumed the OP mixed things up:

So did I, but I assumed whistler confused the CSS terminology. Not many people confuse yellow and blue. unsure.gif
