I agree with pandy about avoiding XHTML unless you have a good reason to use it. In today's browsers (and browser-like OS components), it works correctly only if you send it as plain HTML and the browser treats it as tag soup. So what's the point? It's more direct to send plain HTML in the first place.
I think the time of transition should be complete by now, so I recommend HTML 4.01 Strict rather than HTML 4.01 Transitional. But be sure to read Activating the Right Layout Mode Using the Doctype Declaration. Browsers are more predictable in "standards mode" or "almost standards mode" (where they try to do the right thing) than they are in "quirks mode" (where they try to do the wrong thing the same way that older browsers did it). |

I think the time of transition should be complete by now It will never be complete. Instead of one set of rules we have several. They come in different flavours, too. Sometimes I look at this picture. Then I contemplate suicide. |

@pandy: Thank you for posting that image. Now, I'll go to my room and cry
@Darin: Tnx for link. I'll switch to strict and "go hardcore". Slightly off-topic, it's interesting how many tutorials are out there for really basic things, but when something serious is encountered, there's no advice in miles. You help me a lot, guys. |
