Mine never does (I prevent it by choosing a metered Internet connection).

I use the same setting.

QUOTE
Could it be that you chose to shut down by mistake in the Power menu? Has happened to me once or twice. blush.gif

Nope. That has happened to me too. Since then I always take my time and am careful.

QUOTE
The updater should know the difference!

Indeed, since some updates require a Windows reboot, hibernation doesn't suffice for that. So it makes no sense to start the update process when the user has just chosen to hibernate.

QUOTE
If OTOH Microsoft (in its arrogance) thinks hibernation time is a good time to force a reboot update on the user, you'd assume Windows informed you about it, and also rebooted automatically as usual afterwards (hence why I suspect user error).

Indeed. Provided Windows thought I was turning the machine off the message "Please don't turn your computer off" was very out of place when the shut down had already began!

This time I only had text documents (including some Office like documents) open, and the data was also somewhere else, so just lost a few minutes of my time recreating what was lost. But I often hibernate in the middle of editing photos when sleepiness hits me, and things like that I wouldn't be able to recreate exactly and may have put a lot of work and time into.

Also, even if chose to shut down by mistake, that doesn't explain why there was an update downloading in the first place.

Could it be the Version 21H2 update was forced upon you out of the blue? ISTR that one was labelled "unskippable", but personally I didn't dare to wait and see what would happen after the deadline.

Don't even know what that is. I got no other messages than the one I told you about.

I seem to have Version 10.0.19044 Build 19044 .

On my installation you can see the Version I'm talking about in Settings > System > About, Windows Specifications. Mine says Version 21H2.

Where do you see that?

You may also see what your latest update was about in the update history.

"System information app" it calls itself. Bring up the start menu and type "Windows version". If I look where you did it says 21H2 for me too. wacko.gif

Never understood why the same organization uses different names for the same version. wacko.gif

What I was wondering was which update version that was forced upon you recently? It got me thinking of the mandatory 21H2, maybe that got special abusive priviligies, just like when Windows 7 tried to force-upgrade itself to Windows 10. Also I recall you can't postpone certain updates more than a specific period of time --do you wait long between updates? unsure.gif Then apparently Windows will reboot by itself after an update (unless you disable that), so if an update got force-downloaded it's not a big step to force-reboot as well. Maybe Windows was courteous enough to wait until you chose Hibernation?

How do you mean? Why wouldn't the latest update be the one listed? They can't very well hide what version you've got.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out. I have Windows 21H1 installed, have never seen an update for 21H2. This is what I get when I right-click on the Windows start icon and select 'System':

Edition Windows 10 Pro
Version 21H1
Installed on ‎7/‎19/‎2020
OS build 19043.1766
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4180.0

I was just speculating that Version updates (like 21H2) had higher priviliges to harass the user than the ordinary minor updates (Version updates only come twice a year). But if you have installed smaller updates after Version 21H2 my theory would not be correct.

21H2 came in November 2021, but I think we're "allowed" to postpone each Version update for a year(?).

Well, I've never 'postponed' any update. As far as I can remember I haven't even been offered the update.

I don't have any problem downloading updates. I'm on a wired connection and downloads are fast. I was talking about the actual install process time. The time I was talking about is only for the install process, not the download.

Wikipedia says the build number that coreponds to 21H2 is the one I have, so I guess it was that. Strange if it's a major update, because it didn't take many seconds at all.

Nah. It's not like I have postponed update invitations recently. I think sometimes one option is to update next time one shuts down (or starts? the computer. But I haven't OKed anything either, haven't been bothered by updates in quite a while. And fact remains, they did it when the machine was on it's way into hibernation. The worst time ever. If they are going to force something on you they should tell you and give you a warning, something like "Windows will update in 2 minutes and your computer will reboot. Please save your work.".

I recall the "Version" updates don't show up in the usual list of updates, but as a link below. But it should be hard to miss, maybe MS has simply not decided to offer it to you yet. unsure.gif

One of my recent updates was a bit slow installing actually, can't remember exactly how long it took but hardly more than 10-15 minutes. Most of the time it's less than 5 minutes.

I was trying to say that just because you have Version 21H2 doesn't meant that it was the most recent update, you can get smaller updates between each major "Version" update. For example, I've had 21H2 since January but have installed several smaller ones since then. But if 21H2 was your most recent update, then I would suspect it has special powers.

QUOTE
Nah. It's not like I have postponed update invitations recently. I think sometimes one option is to update next time one shuts down (or starts? the computer.

Version updates are not like that, they're advertized as a separate link and you can ignore them for many months: I installed 20H2 in March 2021 and waited until January 2022 before installing 21H2. But eventually it seems you're not "allowed" to postpone even the Version updates, and I don't know what happens then.

QUOTE

That does sound like you had a backlog.

It depends: if you forbid Windows to update under Active Hours, then maybe it regarded Hibernation as its only opportunity? laugh.gif

BTW, are you sure you used Hibernate, and not Sleep? Apparently the latter can wake itself up to update: https://www.howtogeek.com/444807/will-windo...-in-sleep-mode/ wacko.gif Seems Windows can wake itself up to update from Hibernation as well under some settings: https://www.windows-security.org/7a4c63be93...tically-wake-up wacko.gif

Actually, my PC's shutdown menu has no explicit option for Hibernate, only Shut Down and Sleep. The exact behavior of the Sleep option seems to be defined in the Settings menu, possibly with a grayzone between sleep and true hibernation. unsure.gif

QUOTE(pandy @ Mar 22 2022, 02:51 PM) *

So another Windows update was forced on me. After that FF doesn't work properly. It refuses to play videos on some sites (SVTPlay is OK, TV4Play is not). At some shopping sites, for example elgiganten.se , product images and some other images aren't shown. The sites work as usual in Edge.

What the heck could cause this?

It has happened again, but this time I'm not aware of a Windows update, which doesn't mean it couldn't have happened anyway. Could it be that FF tries to force you you to update when you don't OK its prompts for a while? glare.gif

This time it was a dropdown menu at at forum I use to read that all of a sudden wasn't styled anymore. It's list based so it covered more than a screen height, maybe two. First I thought the site had been hacked, but once I scrolled down everything else was there below the unstyled menu and worked as it should. Tried Edge and everything was dandy. Remembered last time this happend and updated FF and things was back to normal again. I don't know if other sites were affected, haven't been around much lately. But I know, that at least this time, I had avoided to update FF for some time, due to laziness. I get a little tired of their frequent updates sometimes.

Which version do you have? My FF says that 106.05 is the latest.

I've recieved several FF updates the last few days, so I guess there were many bugs needing fixing.

You mean none of the CSS worked? If parts of it worked, you might check to see if some third-party file for the manu styling failed to load.

I guess their workforce needs to make themselves useful, first by creating more features nobody wants, then fix all bugs said new features have introduced. mellow.gif
