Full Version: FTP challenges with FileZilla

James
I was going to ask you to have a look at http://www.perthsms.com.au to see if you could tell me why it was working fine locally on my own computer, but not on the Internet at the above address - it was not using any of the formatting features specified in the CSS file (PerthSMS.css). However. I found the answer before posting the question:

FileZilla is copying across the file name, but not the contents of the file - i.e. file size is = 0.
I noted that the filename PerthSMS.css was in both panes (local and remote) after the upload and proceeded to test the page locally and remotely, and as I say, local worked and remote didn't ... so that problem is now solved.

However, it prompts the question: "Why?
Has anyone else had problems with FileZilla uploading data? (I have used FileZilla for years, by the way, with no problems in older versions)
I would be obliged if some of you could give me the names of your preferred FTP clients, so I can try them out.

Kind regards, James
pandy
It could be your firewall. I had exactly that problem with my last FW. See if using Passive Mode in FileZilla helps.

What FW do you use? Hm. I can't remember which one I had. Maybe it was Comodo, not sure. Anyway, Passive Mode didn't help me, but it can help so give it a try.

Oh, my preferred FTP client is FileZilla. I rather change firewall. biggrin.gif

Thanks, Pandy

The only firewall I have on at the moment is the one that is built into Windows XP, and that has never been a problem in the past. Anyway, doesn't my firewall prevent stuff coming in, rather than outbound files? Maybe i should check with my ISP in case there is a security issue at his end. You have given me an idea, though. I think FileZilla is a multi-platform piece of software, and I have a Linux computer here on my desk as well as the Windows XP machine, so I might try:
1. installing FilZilla on the Linux machine;
2. copy the jpeg logo file to the Linux machine either via my office network or using a USB thumb drive;
3. uploading to my domain on my ISP's server.

I have tired Passive Mode ... didn't work for me either sad.gif

Thanks for your interest - I will let yo know how I get on.

Kind regards, James

FileZilla on the Linux machine with no firewall at all and no anti virus, could not do any better - like the windows machine, it only put the filename on the server but file size = 0

I am waiting for a reply from the hosting service, to see if they can help.

A good firewall should check both in and outgoing. If you have a trojan for example it would try to connect out. I don't know how the Windows FW works, I've always disabled to whole security center first thing.

Have you tried using another FTP client? Just to see if the problem is with FileZilla settings. I can't think of what the problem could be, but trying another client would narrow it down so you know if it's FileZilla or something else that causes it.

I get a complete file from http://www.perthsms.com.au/PerthSMS.css

Are you perhaps viewing a cached version?

Thanks Pandy and Christian - I said I would update you with my progress on this matter.
Talking to you, and visiting other forums, like the FileZilla Forum, the suggestions that came up the most were "firewall" and "routers". By trying differing operating systems (Windows, Linux) and different security levels (firewall and no firewall), the suggestion that there might be a 'dodgy router' between me and the ISP started to seem logical, albeit improbable.

So, I switched to good old fashioned 56k dial-up, and FileZilla uploaded intact files perfectly - so there was something wrong with my Satellite Internet connection, or some part of the chain of bits between me and the satellite ISP, and the overseas ISP, that make up the routes I was using. The satellite dish installer has just left after repositioning the dish and tuning it up, everything is working much better and faster than before ... and ... FileZilla is uploading files properly using my satellite broadband connection!

Many thanks for your inteest and help - and you did both help in getting me to think laterally. We can add this information to our collective knowledge base and maybe help some other satellite user one day.

Kind regards, James.

Wow. I didn't even know that could happen. What a major PITA it would have been if you hadn't managed to get them to fix it.
