Hi,

I wanted to use HTML as front end and MS EXCEL as my database.

Q1. Can EXCEL be used as a database?
Q2. How do I connect the 2?
Q3. HTML has radio buttons which have values, can they be transferred to EXCEL?

There are many more quetions I'd like to ask.. if someone can also give me a code to transfer the values...

Possibly you can use PHP: http://devzone.zend.com/article/3336 (assuming the Excel DB is kept on the server?).

You might submit the values to a server-side PHP script, which in turn writes to Excel.

Also google for "use excel as a database".

Why? Excel is a spreadsheet program -- it's likely to be possible, but probably harder than learning to use a real database, such as MySQL, (or Access if you have some particular reason you can't use non-Microsoft offerings).

Thanks guys for the replies, but it doesn't help much..

I'm a beginner, and don't know what is PHP...

I'll tell you exact what i'm trying... its as simple as a form in HTML as the front end, and EXCEL as the database which will be on a shared drive, now this data will be accessible the front end by means of the HTML front end.

Its kinda complicated but I need a solution, don't have funds for a SQL server or any other database.

Please see the FAQ entry Where can I learn about PHP?

MySQL is free.

I suppose you realise you have to pay a licence fee to Microsoft for every copy of Exel you use?

Anyway, since you don't currently know what you are doing, I advise learning PHP+MySQL. If you can't afford to pay for a hosting service (which I recommend, and it costs very little these days), you can install Apache+PHP+MySQL for total licence fees of zero; you will find plenty of tutorials on doing this, and using an SQL-based database server.

Thanks guys... I'll check and let you know how it works out...

You can not use your excel database spreadsheet online, the only thing you can do is save your excel spreedsheet as an HTML and post your database online for viewing only.

You have two opition since your a beginner like myself.

Opition #1 is pay for an ONLINE database service provider such as http://www.trackvia.com/ , google docs, http://creator.zoho.com/ , www.Caspio.com , (only problem, they are monthly subscription service)

Opition #2 is to hire an PHP/MySQL programmer to design an online database. (Expect to pay for what you expect from your application requirement) If you want something simply I have found someone who is going to do one for me for US$50.00 (i have be qutoted anywhere from $1,500 to $2,000) for an application that will do everything that you can think of.
