Full Version: Getting rid of "jumping"

Hey all.

I'm a total amateur in html and am trying to figure out how to do something for my webpage: www.ent3d.com

If you notice, I have anchors on the thumbnails so that a newly loaded page doesn't start at the very top.

Ideally, I wanted it to appear as if it's all one page even though the url and large images in the viewing area would change every time you click on a new thumb. In other words, at the outset I wanted no jump at all when you click on a thumb and for your location on the page to remain unchanged, but didn't know how to do this. So I compromised by using anchors.

If you guys can offer some ideas/solutions on how to create a seamless transition from one page to the next without "jumping" that would be awesome.

Thanks.

Can't you just remove the anchors? OTOH the header section is so large that most users must scroll down anyway.

Thanks for the reply. Well, removing the anchors would cause each page to load from the top. I'd rather, if possible, have the user's horizontal/vertical location remain exactly the same when going from page to page. That's why I used the anchors, to get closer to that ideal, but I think it's probably just as much of an annoyance to have the page jump a short amount w/ anchors.

Feel free to give more feedback. I'm open to comments/critique too but first I want to get this problem solved if possible.

Just to elaborate a bit more. The intent of the design was to have a gallery of thumbs over a viewing area, so that people could select what images to look at in the viewing area by clicking on respective thumbs. By having the page jump around, either through anchors or the default loading the page from the start, it destroys the whole concept.

Maybe you could load the new images in an IFRAME, or with Javascript. This will make it harder for e.g. search engines to find the images, though.

Thanks Christian. Not at all experienced with IFrames or java for that matter, but I will do some research on it. If you or anyone else comes up with more ideas/pointers, let 'em fly.

The best idea is probably to reduce the header's size drastically, and display it on the index page only. On my 1280 x 960 monitor it looks huge, and there's really no need to display it on every page.

Appreciate the feedback, what are you referring to as the header, the very top banner w/ the name and menu, or more than that?

The reason it's on every page is for employment purposes, just to bang the name into the employer's head. But not in the sense I want each page to load from the top. I think I read another post requesting a solution similar to what I'm asking. Someone mentioned Ajax. Basically, if I could just swap in the appropriate "large" images when you click on a thumbnail, without it affecting anything else, speicifically your position on the page, that would be perfect.

Everything above the thumbnails. The banner fills almost my entire browser window.

BTW it's not immedeately clear that the thumbnails are thumbnails, and you can't tell what they are thumbnails of. Also all images (including the menu link images) lack ALT text, which means that all a search engine will find is the text
"Brahmin. Shown here with a simple diffuse map for display purposes(not used in game). I created the Source Model, Low Poly, Unwrap, and Normal Map. 7500 tris, 2048x2048 Normal Map."

IMHO it's better to use a much smaller but memorable logo (combined with a normal nav menu). A 150-200px wide logo might suffice.

That's not necessary, javascript will do. Some examples (perhaps too fancy): http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex4/indexb.html

Thanks for the valuable feedback Christian. For now I'm going to consider the "jumping" issue an ongoing pursuit. I did a site design overhaul that I think is alot better. check it out www.ent3d.com

Yes that's much better! Currently the index page seems to be the same as http://www.ent3d.com/demon.htm otherwise a menu link to the index page might be a good idea too. Also there's no need for the "#companies_top" part in the links, since it's not used anywhere.

Cool, glad it reads better smile.gif

One quick question, is the default text size in Firefox larger than in explorer?

As for the index page, is there a practical reason to use it vs. the demon.htm?
