Sorry, I don't think I can really help you, as I don't know FireFTP, nor use Firefox as my default browser. I see you are on Mac too, but I prefer Safari by far.

Have you chosen the app through the "browse" button? Otherwise, try the Help for FireFTP.

Why don't you use Transmit or Fetch? They are not free, but with both you can edit your files remotely in your preferred text-editor (for which I'd suggest BBEdit or its free counterpart TextWrangler). Search for either/both FTP apps at macupdate.com.

I use FireFTP, and it works fine. But I thnk it's a very bad idea to have exactly one copy of your web pages. You should at least keep a copy on the server and a separate copy on your own computer.

In other words, don't normally use the "edit on server" function. Just download a copy, edit it, and upload the latest version. AAMOF, I used FireFTP just to look at a file on the server today in my editor, and FireFTP gives a somewhat cryptic message about not locking files. I suspect that if something went wrong as Firefox was sending the updated copy of the file it might occasionally be possible to lose it (after all, you would only have one copy).

So how do I edit on the server? I cant seem to get it to work. I know its best to keep a copy offline its just more convenient for me to edit online, I back everything up now and again anyway.

Thanks

Well, you could ssh to the server and edit the files there. Or you can copy them to your development system, edit them there, and then copy them back to the server.

What is the name of the program you are trying to add? Is it "TextEdit", or "text edit", or something else? You need to get it right.

If for example on the command line [Mac? dunno nuttin about]

textedit test.html

opens textedit and edits test.html, then it should be enough to add textedit as the program.
