Does anyone know the purpose of the "about:" prefix in MSIE?

It appears in relative URLs created by some javascripts I've made (haven't been able to isolate the exact circumstances, and when hovering such a link it resolves to the normal full URL in the status bar, as usual). I also saw it in error pages generated by older Windows OS, so it's not limited to javascript.

How come I have to do everything around here?
