what do cookies mean? and what they er for?
I'm sorry 2 ask I'm such a begainer blush.gif
pandy
They are small text files that are stored on the user's hard disk. They contain data that can be used at a later occasion. For example when you log in at a forum like this one, there's usually an option to be automatically logged in in the future. If you use that option a cookie is stored on your hard disk. Next time you visit the forum the cookie is read. You can be identified and don't have to log in again.

Search for "what are cookies?" (including the quotation marks) at Google.

Hey Pandy, that's an interesting feature. Though I always have the "remember me" checkbox checked in the login page, but I still need to log in manually each time I access the forums. How come?

Is your browser configured to delete cookies?
pandy
Or does she eat them herself? IPB Image

I love (baked) cookies, Pandy, but these browser cookies are a bit too hard to digest biggrin.gif

And Christian, I do have a plugin (SafariPlus) with which I can manage my Safari cookies by asigning favourites to those I want to keep. And of course I have set the (19) WDG cookies to be one of my favourites. Cookies only get deleted when I tell it to.

The only thing I can think of is just to not log out when I leave the forums. But I gathered that I then would seem connected all the time, so I log out.

Would it be just as simple as that?

BTW, while we're at it, is changing which kind of coder you are (or how is that called) only reserved to moderators? I don't feel much of an ethical hacker, you see.

Moderators can change their own forum titles to whatever they want. Admins can change the default forum titles as well.

Any suggestions? The current hierarchy is
  • 0-9 (nothing)
  • 10-19 Newbie
  • 20-29 Novice
  • 30-99 Member
  • 100-249 Advanced Member
  • 250-499 Serious Coder
  • 500-999 Serious Contributor
  • 1000-1499 This is My Life
  • 1500+ Programming Fanatic

Yes, that's what the logout function does. It keeps you kogged out. Deletes the cookies or replaces them, whatever. smile.gif

And don't you try to fool me. I've seen you with your hand in the cookie jar more than once. No more of that, you hear! angry.gif tongue.gif

The whole post count thing is stupid IMO. blink.gif

People familiar with this kind of thing can use the number of icons (aka "donuts") to figure out who's new and who's a more experienced poster. Experience doesn't necessarily correlate with knowledge or helpfulness though.

I think the names are pretty arbitrary right now, and I can't thing of any better names. How about using "Registered Member" for anyone with 0 posts, using "Contributing Member" for anyone with 1+ posts, and having just the number of icons/donuts show how much someone has posted?

Sure. The less ranking the better.

I never log out on my computer/account. And I never have to log in.
i have both the checkbox ticked for Remember Me and the Keychain stores it as well.

Of course I would not do that on a shared computer.
Frederiek
Thanks, Darin, that's already much better.

Not a bad idea to have just one description name and the "donuts" indicating a quick view of how much someone posted, although the post count is already indicated too.

Oh, well, I won't log out anymore then. I simply didn't want to give the impression that I'm connected to the forums, when I'm not.

Gee, Pandy, can I eat those "donuts" too?

When you close the browser window your session expires and within minutes your logged in status will change.

I'd appreciate if you would eat my doughnuts. biggrin.gif
Frederiek
Thanks, Jim. I don't log out anymore, which saves me the fuzz.

Hey, Pandy, are we going to discuss English or American spelling now?
pandy
I changed it in my title only because it got too long with English spelling.
pandy
Frederiek, this is my take on the spelling issue.
