Hi, is there anyway to get older browsers to read HTML5?
pandy
No. Not if you mean the new elements.

Is there any statistics on how many people use older browsers?

You can trick older browsers to treat HTML5 elements as block level or inline elements, see http://diveintohtml5.info/semantics.html#unknown-elements

Why do I feel transported back to the time of the browser upgrade campaign and all the hacks? sad.gif

There are lots, here are a just a couple:
http://caniuse.com/usage-table
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp
--note how different the figures are for a major browser like Firefox.

It also depends a lot on what you mean with "older browser". No browser supports all HTML5 yet, so in a way they are all old. Also any stats will be unique for every web site.

It's much better to use progressive enhancement design techniques, then browser support doesn't really matter. See http://alistapart.com/article/understandin...siveenhancement

Personally I don't care about IE8 and older any more, and I can't (and don't) test in any except the latest Firefox and Chrome versions.

I don't think the hacks ever ended, it's just that many routinely use script libraries instead now. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modernizr for feature detection and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTML5_Shiv to add support in older IE.

I personally don't use script libraries since they tend to slow down pages, so I have no experience with these.

With so many browser options, how do you design a modern website that most people can see correctly?
pandy
Basically you don't or you accept that not everyone will be able to use it as intended.

This is one campaign that is dead as a herring.
