Do you think a Globally Pinned Welcome and Simple Instructions would be a good idea?

I was reading this response from John, and I'm pretty sure that, except for the banging head against desk part, I'll see something similar hundreds of more times

We're glad you found our forums, and I hope that the next time you have a problem you come back and ask rather than "sitting here banging my head against my desk".

Don't feel shy about asking questions. The odds are very high that if you have the question others do to, and since these forums are searchable it may help others out in the future to see the problem solved here.

Maybe some simple guidelines, like Try Searching, Use a meaningful Title, post the URL . . .

Yes. This is an excellent idea. Basically, the way we would do this is to create a post in each forum and then we can pin it.

I don't mind taking a swag at this, but I'm swamped with a long laundry list. If anyone else wishes to volunteer to draft something for discussion here it would be great. Heck, if someone else creates the whole damn thing I'll just pin it as is. wink.gif

Though we probably should discuss a draft as a group for a little bit to make sure everyone is happy...

How about something simple, like this ->

Welcome to the HTMLHelp Forums. There are many friendly people here to guide you in your search for knowledge of HTML programming and related web authoring activities.

Please feel free to post your question to the appropriate forum (no need to feel embarassed, everyone starts somewhere).

Here are a few simple guidelines to help those here help you. Following these simple rules will help you get a better answer faster.

• Make the title of your NewTopic meaningful and illustrative to those viewing the board.
• Include the code sections, or more preferably the URL of the page(s) you are discussing.
• You can always use the Search function at the top of the page to search for posts with problems similar to yours. Many times some other thread will give you clues to solve your problem on your own.

Along the lines of the Search suggestion . . . have you thought about making the Search function available to non-members?

I like it. Let's see if we get any other feedback or comments. After we get the feedback it you want to post the final in the forums I'll pin it. smile.gif

That was a default setting and I hadn't noticed it... but now anyone (theoretically) can use the search.

AWESOME!!! That is simply AWESOME! biggrin.gif

We gotta get us one of those... But in the meantime since there haven't been any further comments on your suggestions perhaps we should pin them as is?

Yes, it's good. That's why we haven't said anything. smile.gif

Jim,

Do you want to post them and then I'll pin them, or do you want me to take care of the whole thing?

John
jimlongo
I can post it.

Do I need to put one in every forum, or do you have a feature "Globally pinned" that can pin one item to every forum?

John Pozadzides
Thanks for taking care of that Jim. I think pandy or Christian must have beat me to the punch at pinning all of the posts. I did however go back and lock them all and I also did just a little editing. I added the BB Code for the list items instead of the characters you had in there. It helps with the formatting a bit.

John

Yeah that's better that way. Thanks. I was trying to stay away from using BBCode just this once

Apropos of the content of the welcome message, while "harassed" is indeed so spelled, "embarrassed" conventionally has two Rs.

Details, details... Better?

Yep, I plead guilty of that job description, even though at least half the time it feels more like "baby sitter". Spelling doesn't much interest me; however, it does concern some people a lot and I thought you might want to make a good impression even on them.
