If you are starting a website and you think it will become popular, or if it is just your business name, do you try to buy multiple domains of that name with different Top Level Domains?

Meaning, if your domain was yoursite.com, do you also try to buy yoursite.net?

Do you think doing this is just a waste of money?

But that's what the topic says. Gee, it must be magic! biggrin.gif

Personally, I never gain on anything, so for me everything is a waste of money. Still, I kling on to domains because I like their names even if I don't use them. Sucker, huh?

For a business, go ahead and do it if you think it's of any importance at all for you. A domain costs about 10 bucks. What do you get for that? Where I live I could maybe get a pizza if I stretched the bill.

I'm on the board of a social club. We have a .org domain name already. Actually, we have two .org domain names, because there is a common misspelling of our club name, so we bought the misspelled domain name and redirected it to our main domain name.

Recently, the new .club top-level domain became available. We discussed buying a .club domain name, but decided against it. But we are not trying to establish a monopoly on our club name. As long as members (and potential members) can find us, we're happy.

I would expect most small businesses to be in a similar situation. As long as customers can find you, you're happy.

Of course, an international corporation that is fanatical about its trademark might see things differently. For them, the cost of buying additional domain names is trivial (compared to the billions of $ they spend on other expenses), and the perceived value of establishing a monopoly on their name is non-trivial.

There's a lot of TLDs if you want to buy them all...
