They change this all the time. I find no way to avoid the darn redirection to google.se anymore. Not even using http://www.google.com/ncr works. I have to click the link "Use google.com" every time. Anyone figured out if it still can be done?

I don't understand why they do this. Why would anyone type google.com if they wanted google.se? This and the horrific auto translation of sites to your assumed native and preferred language are equally annoying. mad.gif

I find no way to avoid the darn redirection to google.se anymore.

Seems Google redirects to the percieved country of e.g. your IP. Maybe some IPs are exceptions, like ones from the US? If you use a VPN you could try to use such IPs.

QUOTE
Not even using http://www.google.com/ncr works.

That should work according to the support pages:
"If you want to use google.com instead of your local Google site, you have two options:

* If you've been redirected by google.com to another Google site (like Google.fr), click the google.com link in the bottom right corner of the page.
* Bookmark http://www.google.com/ncr. Anytime you visit this page, you’ll be taken to google.com. Note: If you delete your cache or cookies, you'll need to bookmark the link again."

But why have to bookmark the link again if you've deleted your cache or cookies --to stop google.com from redirecting you again? wacko.gif

QUOTE
I have to click the link "Use google.com" every time.

Can't you bookmark that link's URL? (Perhaps you may want to remove the session ID(?) string from it first.)

I assume the majority of Google users just want "Google" regardless of domain.

I tested google.com with an IP from Germany, and got redirected to google.de which displayed the "Use Google.com" link in German ("Google.com verwenden"). But when I changed language (by clicking the link "Google.de angeboten auf: English") the "Use google.com" link didn't appear on the English page. In other words, German-speaking users in Germany may use google.com, but not English-speaking users. mellow.gif

So does any of that work for you? If it does it's something wrong in my end. Anything apart from playing with your IP address, I mean. I don't want to go that much trouble to use a search engine. Even clicking the link to google.com is too much and using the ncr URL was too. I type, I don't click bookmarks that often.

There's an additional problem. I don't seem able to select the language for google.com and google.se separately. Not that important, but I used to have google.com in English and google.se in Swedish. wacko.gif

So does any of that work for you?

Can't say. I only use Google with the Tor browser, so I use to get different IPs every time.

Do you allow cookies from Google? That might complicate things.

Wait, I didn't realize what you were saying. You mean I should disallow cookies from google?

This is strange. I seldom browse the net on my phone, so I haven't noticed this before. On my phone I can choose freely between google.com and google.se without interference. What's the difference?

If you allow cookies maybe Google saves your search settings in your profile. Maybe those settings don't change just because you use http://www.google.com/ncr or make other temporary changes each visit (haven't tested myself)? And of course, with cookies enabled Google can track you even easier. smile.gif

Does Google recognize you as the same person both on desktop and phone?

If at home I use wifi so it should be the same IP, but otherwise I don't know how how they could know it's me. I use a gmail account for the phone, but I only access it from the phone.

I don't understand if you mean I should allow cookies or not. Anyway, it doesn't matter if I'm logged in to a google account or not. It happens whatever I do.

This crap with google accounts is another annoyance. So many sites require google loogin now. Either you stay logged in and let google track you even more and mess even more with your search results or you need to log in each time you visit one of those sites. It sucks! ninja.gif

If you don't use cookies, I guess Google's default search settings are set to google.se in Swedish language for Swedish IPs.

If you do use cookies, check what your Google search settings are. Maybe they're set to google.se in Swedish by your cookie, and will keep going back to that even if you change domain and language every new session. It could also be that different browsers overwrite each others search settings.

Does your phone browser allow cookies, and is it tied to the same google account as the desktop browsers?

Actually, after probably half a year of misery Google has started to work for me as before again. Go figure. I haven't changed anything and the problem was affecting all my browsers, so I don't see how it could be anything in my end.

Well, all's well that ends well. Happy again! biggrin.gif

johnniewalk, yes, but you are supposed to be able to choose to use google.com or whatever you prefer, only Google makes that hard for us. IMO I should get what I ask for. If I type google.com I should get google.com without having to perform a bunch of tricks first. It once was that simple...
