I am not so sure. I only used phpbb and that's in 2008! Recently hearing good stuffs for vanilla forums. You can check their official site for more information.

I used simplemachines forum years ago and thought it was ok, was easy to style with the CSS and everything. But it wasn't as good with blocking spam.

I've used Helprace. It's a brand-centric forum that's aimed at customer support. However it can be used as a regular forum (don't know anyone who has used it as one, though).
