Hi
Recently I have updated Windows XP with SP2, SP3 and IE7.
Footnotes previously linked thus: <A HREF=#ref13_71>[71]</A> and anchored thus: <A NAME=#ref13_71>[71]</A>
will now no longer provide a return to the place in text from which they were triggered, but automatically switch back to the beginning of the document each time. Return from the footnote usually pauses for a split second at the correct place in text before switching to the beginning of the document.
I have tried inserting rel and rev elements, but without success. Is this the right thing to do? Please suggest actual format if recommended.

Hi Pandy

Thank you again for your reply.

I have tried "" viz. <A HREF="#ref13_71">[71]</A> and <A NAME="ref13_71">[71]</A> and other permutations which you seem to be suggesting, in both link and anchor and in link or anchor, but without success.

I am not a programmer or Web designer as I am sure you are aware: simply trying to produce a prototype which works, which can be handed over to a proper developer if it is deemed worthy of implementation. Having upgraded my Windows software, I believe this footnote function is the only one which has become disabled.

I looked at the information on HTML 4 which you suggested and I have tried to understand your suggestion, but I may be getting it wrong. Please forgive me for bothering you further, but if you could actually write the elements out it would be better for a "bear of very little brain" like me.

Should I be putting a DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC heading in as well, and if so, which one?

Best wishes

Please see the FAQ entry What is a DOCTYPE? Which one do I use?
