Does anyone know any good links or have any good advice on making a login system using MySQL database and PHP?

Usually, the login system is part of a larger system, not something that stands alone. Are you trying to create a login system for a forum? for a CMS? for something else?

If you are looking for a prepackaged, self-contained sign in system, you may want to look at:

http://barebonescms.com/documentation/sso/

Which is an enterprise-grade Single Sign-On (SSO) system written in PHP.

Does the software you're using for tournament signups support registration and login?

I'm not using any software. Should I be? If so what kind? I was hoping there is a way I could just make a members login and then they click a button on the tournaments page that signs them up for it.

Also, I was hoping to somehow make it to where the right column where they sign in changes to their own personal information after they login. Is this possible?

Perhaps one of these PHP game-management programs will meet your needs:
