I am interested in creating a background image that would accommodate any or most computer screens without a repeat. What is the ideal maximum size for a background image? Currently I am using one that is 2000x800 and it is 176 kb. Is there an ideal image size that would serve more screens statistically?
Any help is appreciated. |

QUOTE Currently I am using one that is 2000x800 and it is 176 kb. That is way too big for a background image.Your best bet is probably to rethink the design, so each major area on your page is styled separately, rather than trying to use a single huge background image for the whole page. |

You might take a look at background image to fit screen for a couple of ideas.

Thank you for your replies.
Strange. I answered Mr McGrew's post. It displayed and has now duly disappeared. Thank you Corey for the lead. I've been experimenting with pngnq, pngcrush and several other utilities and it is simply amazing how much data can be flushed from a png! Can you tell I'm having fun?? I've managed to take the graphics and whack 2/3 of the file size without appreciable notice. |

Very possible because I did preview it.
I've managed to reduced the background a somewhat smaller size. My concern was that someone with a large flat screen would not get the full benefit (effect) of the art work and css positioning. I did have some 'hidden' aspects to deal with the overflow. But then on Mr. Mcgrew's suggestion to rethink I cut it back. Mr. Bryant, yes, css play is a really inspirational site. Thanks again for the reminder. Once again. I do greatly appreciate your time and effort on my behalf one and all. |
