Thanks for the suggestion.

Although these are brand new forums, we've had discussion boards on HTMLHelp.com for almost 10 years. Before we installed the new one we asked our long time users what features they would like, and the response was unanimous that they preferred a more simple board which was unencumbered by many "features".

We probably won't be installing a shout box because I don't think that it will go over very well, but we do have an "off topic" forum and the Personal Message system for chatting about things that are not appropriate in the normal forums.

Okay, Googling didn't seem to help much. What's a "shoutout box" and why would we want one? And what was the gabbly.com link supposed to do (besides open a blank window)?

It's actually "shoutbox"...
See: http://mods.invisionize.com/db/index.php/f/3305

Basically think of it as an IM window that you don't have to actually log in to use. Here is a little one on a Blog:

You need to turn JS on, Darin. Possibly it doesn't work with Opera. It's couple of months since I last tried it and I don't remember.

Okay... IM sessions are hard enough to follow when you know who everyone is. I don't see the appeal of shoutboxes. But I don't see the appeal of a lot of things people put on the web.

I´ve never understood the appeal of chat.

Apropos of shouting, http://forums.htmlhelp.com/index.php?showtopic=271 (pardon the lack of proper markup; I can´t figure out the how to access the bottom-right choice on each keytop of an Estonian keyboard) reminds me that people will be able to SHOUT THEIR MESSAGE TITLES. An excellent feature (except of course on the rare occasion when it affected my own titles) of the old board was the way it would lower the case. If this could be implemented here, it would be welcome.

Peter,

The board does have a setting which would stop the shouting in topic titles, but I didn't enable it because it will also disrupt titles such as, "Problem with HTML coding" or "My CSS is messed up", etc.

I did edit the case on the topic which you linked to. I don't know what the right answer here is. I guess we have two options, the moderators can manually stop the shouting in cases where it isn't warranted, or we can put up with screwed up titles.

With the current volume on the board perhaps it's best if the moderators take care of it for now?

Well, the old board converts the case of subject lines to cap/lc [*] only when the subject line contains more than one word, and the subject line contains no lower-case letters. So subject lines like "Problem with HTML coding" or even just "HTML" are left alone, but subject lines like "PROBLEM WITH HTML CODING" or "HTML 4.1" are converted to "Problem With Html Coding" and "Html 4.1".

[*] Okay, technically, it isn't cap/lc because it doesn't leave articles and such in lower-case, but it's as close as I could get without teaching it anything about the English language.
