We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.

Read Adobe Blog post

Adobe has announced it will no longer develop Flash for mobile devices. The writing is on the wall, I give Flash on the desktop another year before it's dead and buried as well.

Also apparently Silverlight is not going to be developed any longer.

HTML5 and Javascript is the future of the web. No more plug-ins. Long overdue imo.

If you use Flash to embed audio or video on a web page, there are many different Flash players to choose from. But what happens if/when the HTML5 VIDEO element is finally supported --can such an element accomodate different players, or will everybody have to use their browser's UI?

Javascript.

There are lots of players. Getting constant browser support is an area that needs improvement.

You almost make it sound like using the familiar UI of your browser is a bad thing. One of the things I find annoying about sites that make heavy use of Flash is the way they break the familiar UI, forcing me to do normal everyday things in strange unique ways.

Javascript.

Of course. blush.gif And regarding browser support, even Flash often suffers from more or less buggy JS-based detection scripts.

True. OTOH a mere Flash media player should be much less confusing than making say a site's navigation, a form or an entire site out of Flash. Most Flash media players I've used have been pretty intuitive to use from the start. Still one might argue that the site visitor should decide this (through his choice of browser*), not the site owner.

(* assuming there are suitable browsers to choose from)
