 HTML issues with IE8... banging head on wall |

I'm working on this website and it renders in Firefox and IE9 perfectly fine but the bottom half breaks alignment on IE8 . I cannot figure out what I'm doing wrong here:

I don't have access to MSIE, but the markup and CSS errors reported by the online tools don't help:
