Lately some emails I've sent (to e.g. Gmail and Hotmail) have ended up in the recipient's spam folder, and I'm trying to find out if it's just a coincidence.

There's nothing spammy about the body content of the emails (no HTML, no images, no attachments, no fishy keywords). Don't know if my email headers are suddenly considered suspicious. I do use an SMTP server that's different from my ancient email address if that matters. I have no idea if my SMTP server or email address have been blacklisted somehow.

I have problems sometimes with relayed emails (using ISPs SMTP) when mailing to companies, but they bounce.

Don't know what Gmail is up to. Sorry.

So many variables to check that could cause failures
If you run your own mail server you could look into these.

Helo before Mail
DKIM
SPF records

CHeck these to see if your IP is on a RBL (there's many more but these are the main ones)

http://www.barracudacentral.org
http://www.spamrats.com/about.php
http://spamcop.net/bl.shtml
http://www.spamhaus.org/zen/index.lasso

If your SMTP and email are different domains make sure you have Authentication ON.
Are you using SSL - I would recommend that if it's available.

Didn't find it.

They are different. Which authentication setting is that?

Sorry in the case of Authentication I was thinking of your email client.
If you're sending from a desktop client check the account settings.

Also check the email headers - send email to these addresses

check-auth@verifier.port25.com
check-auth2@verifier.port25.com
check@isnotspam.com

http://www.port25.com has a lot of good info.

If you're sending from a desktop client check the account settings.

There are a couple of vaguely relevant checkboxes. Ticking one of them didn't seem to make any difference, while ticking another prevented me from sending and receiving mail altogether.

The first one gave my email neutral grades. mellow.gif

I wouldn't worry too much in that case.

The second is the same except checks reply to address instead of from.
The third will probably give you similar results to the first one.

I tried that and nothing happened. Shouldn't I get an immediate reply or does it take some time? unsure.gif

As an alternative you can go to http://isnotspam.com and enter your email address to get a report.
