Ok so here's my "problem". I am creating a semi-bulky website, thus I want to allow visitors to cache the large images and a good majority of the content. But critical pages like the index and a few others will be updated regularly.

How to do make that content expire after a few days or so, WITHOUT entering a manual date? Is there a way to say this page is good for seven days after you visit it? Then anyone coming back would have an expired page and be forced to get a new one?

Hopefully there's a simple answer here. I have researched this on the web and saw a few things I really didn't want to do. I don't have access to any detailed settings in IIS, just basically the content.

Any ideas?

Cache control is a dark art understood only by Server Mages and the terminally dull. See http://www.mnot.net/cache_docs/#META if your interested in dabbling.

Thanks for the reply and link. This is exactly what I need but was hoping there was a much easier way with some generic html. I really didn't want to have to dabble in this, as I am just an avid google driven coder.

From what I have read it looks as if I need to configure an .htaccess file to accomplish this? Setting the content to expire driven off of when the visitor first sees it? Can anyone confirm this before I make the website "go boom" lol.

Yes, you need to configure your server to control caching of your documents. You can't do it just with HTML.

See also the FAQ entry How do I stop my page from being cached?
