I'm not sure what to think of this latest proposal. But it sure seems a lot of well known people have many opinions on both sides of the divide.
IE Version Targeting About a weeks worth of reading here. Sounds like it could be the greatest thing since sliced bread, or the death of any chance of web standards in our lifetime. |

It also sounds like the source code of browsers will need to get bulkier and bulkier and bulkier. How far back is this backward compatibility supposed to stretch? They have 4 in the examples there.
I do like the meta tag approach. In fact, believe me or not, but I've said that's the way they should have gone to start with. The doctype switching is just ugly. I don't know, but my initial feeling is that it'll get to complex. Don't think I like the targeting of each and every version... |

It also sounds like the source code of browsers will need to get bulkier and bulkier and bulkier. How far back is this backward compatibility supposed to stretch? They have 4 in the examples there. I don't know about browser bloat, since in those links I see that FF, Safari and Opera have all chimed in with "we don't see any reason to go along with this". So once again it seems like a MS only approach. QUOTE I don't know, but my initial feeling is that it'll get to complex. Don't think I like the targeting of each and every version... There seems to be a feeling that content="IE=edge" will be the lazyman's approach to using this new feature. |

OK, so if it's IE only what's the point? We already have conditional comments. Well, if IE turns out to be an ever greater mess I can see the advantage in getting it to behave as, say, IE7.
Oh, it will be lovely! Imagine combining conditional comments and a bunch of hacks with this! Fun times! Maybe I'll do some sniffing too for the heck of it. |

QUOTE There seems to be a feeling that content="IE=edge" will be the lazyman's approach to using this new feature. It would be nice if standards-oriented browsers became dominant enough that we could just ignore MSIE and its BS... |

I still think the basic idea to use Meta for switching is good. Just not so sure what should be switched.

Seems we have a little backtracking here.
IE8 "Standards Mode" will try to comply with standards, and if you want to emulate IE7s "standards mode" you will need to explicitly state that with a meta tag. |
