I have started a new web directory http://www.webhosting-directory.org and I promoted it well enough but I have not been rewarded the way i should have been by Google. I want to know, if there is anything wrong in the HTMl code. Please help!

You use an HTML 4.01 doctype, but much of the markup looks like XHTML. I recommend using HTML 4.01, then fix the validator errors: http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/
I assume you're already familiar with http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/b...py?answer=35769 One problem with any directory might be that they look like "link farms". Apparently more than 100 links per page are discouraged. Another problem might be how you've created your content: if it's taken from other directories (DMOZ etc) your site will look like a duplicate. All empty category listings on the site (besides the common site content) will look like duplicates of each other. As a side-note the text is very small, which will make it inconvenient for many humans to read. |

There are still errors: http://www.htmlhelp.com/cgi-bin/validate.c...-directory.org/
One reason might be that you use an HTML4 doctype with XHTML closing slashes in "empty" elements (like META or INPUT). |

Does Google care? There are other reasons to fix the errors but I don't think Google ranking is one of them (alas).

Does Google care? Forgot about the original question! The Google Pagerank appears to be very low, 1/10, which implies more sites need to link to you (serious ones, not link farms). A related problem is that there's lots of competition for your search words ("web hosting", "hosting directory", etc), so getting good result on these will be very hard indeed. Try to come up with some related words/phrases that noone else thought about yet. |
