I was wondering if anyone knew of a "simple" way to stop the "Simplified View" option in Android Chrome browsers when people visit my site and click on the option? When my site is viewed in "Simplified View," the table of contents links disappear along with most of the important content, and there is no way to navigate further into my website. I'm pretty HTML illiterate. So, I ask this question with the suspicion that I won't have the technical skills to follow through on your suggestions-- assuming there is a way to disable this option. However, I'm sure the information wont go to waste. Even if I can't put the suggestion to use, I'm sure there are others in the Web world with the same problem who might find the answer useful. Thanks so much!

Don't know for sure, but I wouldn't think so since it's an accessibility browser setting.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a "simple" way to stop the "Simplified View" option in Android Chrome browsers when people visit my site and click on the option? You might try to find the specific things on your page that triggers the Simplified View option (here's an example), alas I don't know any details. The best general way might be to create clean pages, so that users won't feel the need to enable SV even if the option does show up. QUOTE When my site is viewed in "Simplified View," the table of contents links disappear along with most of the important content Sounds strange that the important content disappears, since that's the opposite of what SV is supposed to do. If you post a link to the page maybe someone can take a look. QUOTE and there is no way to navigate further into my website. From what I've read users can disable SV by going back, so hopefully they'll figure it out. |

Triggers? Do you mean it turns on automatically now? I thought user interaction was required.

I thought user interaction was required. From what I read you need to enable it, but if the Stackoverflow page I linked to is correct simple page content does not always trigger the option: "once the font size was big enough to be readable on the mobile device I was using, it stopped suggesting the simplified view." |

Thank you for the responses. As you suggest, it looks like the best and probably easiest solution is to clean up the index page and increase the font size of the remaining text to see if it works better when a user requests a simplified view. I'm pretty swamped with work right now, but in a few weeks I will try doing this on a test page to see what happens. You're right, user interaction is required to activate Simplified View, but I worry that people will become confused and not know to click back. In the meantime, here is a link to my index page as it currently exists. www.dangheno.net If you see something obvious triggering the SV option, please let me know. Thanks again for all the previous information. It's been helpful.

I've never gotten that suggestion. I have to enable it on options. That said, I don't browse with my phone if I can avoid it.

You're right, user interaction is required to activate Simplified View, but I worry that people will become confused and not know to click back. It seems users must both enable it in their Chrome preferences and accept it on every web page that shows the option, is that correct? If so they should hopefully be familiar with the tool and what it does with web pages. QUOTE here is a link to my index page as it currently exists. www.dangheno.net If you see something obvious triggering the SV option, please let me know. Font sizes seem OK, almost all are normal or larger. Other than that I can only think of the following potential triggers: -Horizonthal scrolling in narrow windows due to the large images (possibly you could let the images shrink in narrow windows with CSS media queries). -Table layout (the table width expands to fit the widest content, making everything else equally wide). -Text on a dark background (might be considered hard to read). -Centered text (might be considered hard to read). QUOTE Thanks again for all the previous information. It's been helpful. You too, I hadn't heard about Simplified View before. |
