Can anyone please help??
When viewing source code in Dreamweaver I have the following code right at the top as would be expected. <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" lang="en"> The web page looks find when viewed locally and the code should be 100% fine, but when put on the internet I get a < visible in the top left of the screen and when doing a view source, I get the following (note the addition of the extra < ) <<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> The extra < is not there in there in the local file (opened in notepad to check), so seems to be added only when that file is put online. Has anyone got any idea what's going on and more to the point, how to fix it?? Thanks in advance Carl |

Are you sure you uploaded the right file and not another version of it? Or you could have uploaded it to the wrong directory and are viewing an old copy of your index.

Definitely the right file that's been uploaded to the right place. I've checked everything I can think of, which is why I'm so perplexed!

What if you delete or rename the file on the server and upload again. Do you still get the extra "<"?

Tried deleting the whole site and uploading again. Get it on new pages, regardless of name, though there is a random element.
E.g. occuring here: http://www.holisticcentre.co.uk/about_the_centre.htm ...but not here: http://www.holisticcentre.co.uk/full_therapy_list.htm It's almost as though the hosting company Verio are adding the extra < as I don't have it with other websites that are hosted elsewhere. Problem is, they deny that this is possible. |

I'm stumped. I can't explain how this happens.
Unless you after all upload other files than you think. Do you use DW for FTP and does there exist other/older versions of the site on your HD? There is also what's called server cashing, but I don't know if it's used anymore. Have you at any point created a file with that mistake in it that you know of? |

Don't worry Pandy, I appreciate your efforts.
I'm beginning to conclude it's a Verio issue as I took a page from another site and hosted it on Verio where the problem occurs again: http://www.holisticcentre.co.uk/Halo/ ...and also on 1&1, where there's no problem: http://www.carlhancockmarketing.co.uk/Halo/ I did point this out to Verio and they just said it was my problem! |

That's crazy! Never heard about anything like it. Why do they meddle with your files in the first place?
