I am trying to make it where you can drag an image link form the web site to the desktop and make the image icon for that shortcut on the desk top the same image as the image link.

So in other words: There is an image that is a link on the site. The user drags that image onto their desktop, yet, instead of the desktop displaying the icon for safari/chrome/etc., it automatically displays an image that I provide.

Is there any way to make this happen?

I really appreciate any help you can provide! Thanks!

Well, if your image is the same as a favicon used for the page you link to. Otherwise I don't think there is a way.

How do you do it using the favicon for the page?

Just to make sure we're both on the same page, you're talking about dragging a link to the desktop, right? Not bookmarking it. The link you gave me was for bookmarking it, and I tried changing the favicon for the page and changing the image that was a link to the favicon, but it still had safari's icon when I dragged it to my desktop.

Thanks for your help anyway, though!

The icon on your desktop is a bookmark, or rather they are the same thing, at least if you are on Windows, Internet shortcuts I think the term is. I was sure it would work, but I'm a little more uncertain now. It's complicated by that favicons are tricky to begin with, especially when IE is involved and when the shortcut is on your desktop I suspect IE is involved whatever browser you actually used when you dragged the link. I get inconsistent results even when dragging the the URL from the address bar when I try now. Sometime I get the favicon on my desktop, sometimes I get the default icon.

Anyway, AFAIK there is no other way to do it. That would involve more access to the user's computer than is reasonable.

Thank you so much for al your help!

Is there any way that we could automatically generate a shortcut link to the website with an embedded custom icon?
