Here's an interesting article about the progress of HTML 5.

Is there any interest among browser companies? I didn't even know it had a home at the w3c now.

Well, HTML 5 was originally being driven by WHATWG, which included members from Apple (Safari), the Mozilla Foundation (Firefox), and Opera Software (Opera). 3 out of 4 ain't bad...

Well some things have already been adopted by browsers, such as the canvas tag. Also I see that some CSS3 properties are starting to be used in certain browsers, which I guess is alright as long as they degrade gracefully. |

get the nightly build from webkit.org if you want to try some of those latest CSS additions. There not in the main release yet.

Beauty of course being in the eye of the beholder . . .
it does make those CSS animations work the way they're intended to. |

But can one install nightly builds safely without it touching the system's installed Safari? Have you tried that, Jim?

Webkit is just an app, it has no effect on libraries or any other installed elements. You can have both the official version and webkit and run both if you prefer. The only hassle with running webkit which I have been doing on my Tiger computers is that it doesn't save favicons between restarts. I have been using it in Leopard on and off, but noticed even some of those newer features like CSS animation and transforms aren't yet incorporated in 3.x official releases. |

Thanks, Jim. I might give it a try then. I was worried about installed plugins (mainly SafariStand and SafariPlus) that would cause the Webkit builds not to work. Oh well, I just don't install them on Webkit then. Pity, they don't work that well anymore in Safari 3. I just love the source coloring and the possibilty to apply changes in online pages (that's how I do tests for these forums
 ). But the feature is grayed out.I'm still on (the latest update of) Tiger. I hope to have Leopard soon and hope that the source coloring in the Leopard version of SafariStand works again. |

Sometimes webkit does give you warnings about 3rd party extensions installed, but I haven't seen any ill effects from them myself.
